There are five different varieties of flowers in this mixed floral botanical work.
They are (with Latin names included):
Freesia x kewensis
Alstroemeria 'Inca Sundance'
Rosa canina Dog Rose
Hydrangea macrophilia var. unknown
Alstroemeria 'Isabelle'
This beautiful array of flowers was a combination of some individual stems that I sourced from a florist, such as the Freesia and Alstroemeria, the Dog Rose from a hedgerow, and the Autumnal hues of the Hydrangea was from my garden.
I chose flowers that work well together and also have complementary colours. Blue flowers are a joy to paint and these big Freesia have a glorious gradation of colours with their soft violet blues and yellow hues.
Yellow is often a colour that artists avoid in the botanical world, but one thing I have not done over the last few years is shy away from colour and you will see many hues of yellow running throughout.
I also concentrated on the leaves - I tried to find examples with differing textures and colours and also wanted the feel of this to be rather organic in its composition.
I use Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolours, as the hues and texture of the paint really suit my style of painting.
I can imagine this a wonderful addition to almost any room in the house or workspace. We often walk by some of these beautiful flowers every year without stopping a while to admire them. Sometimes the flower bouquet's beauty is all so ephemeral and my hope is that the artwork, with its permanence, could brighten someone's day.
