The original Watercolour painting of this group of Allium cepa (Red onions) took nearly three months to complete, with a large amount of sketchbook preparation, and over 80 hours of painting the final piece. The resulting work hopefully shows how we can elevate the simplest of forms that pass us by everyday. The incredible change of colours and textures that makes up each red onion reveal that no two are the same. My principal aim was to show as much as possible of the specimens, from the internal off white/ purple layers to the diverse crisp, shiny or matt external layers of skin, tops and roots.

A little insight into the techniques I used to create the work - Every onion or dissection was lightly sketched in graphite on the page and when I was ready to paint the base layers, I would gently remove the graphite and paint in watercolour, gradually building up the layers to create the final three-dimensional forms. Much consideration was put into the tonal values of each onion, considering how light hits the surface and, importantly, to paint from life. I use Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolours, as the bright colours and feel of the paint suit my style and there are some wonderful hues for dry brushing - another technique that is crucial to my work. By using a 'dry brush' on certain areas, I can really control the paint, in a similar way to a coloured pencil and am able to achieve a greater depth of colour.
