My initial love for these beautiful flowers derived from a William Morris painting that I saw many years ago from a permanent collection at a gallery attached to my old university.

Geometric patterns in nature fascinate me and these wonderful chequerboard designs on the flowerheads of Fritillaria meleagris are mesmerising, especially when you see them up close. These wonderful plants reappear in my garden each year in mid to late Spring and initially, you see the pale green buds that start to resemble the distinctive ‘snakeshead’ forms.

It has taken a long time to get the composition as I wanted with all the fiddly leaves and stems. One of my main aims was to try and reveal the various stages of the flowerheads from when they really look like a snakeshead to when they are larger and have fully deepened in colour. The elongated leaves weave in and out of the stems and have helped to create some movement.

For this piece, I have chosen the highest quality archival Hahnemühle Cotton Rag Giclée. These thick, smooth papers last for 80+ years, have a fantastic colour quality that I find replicates the original details to such an extent, it would be difficult to separate them.

The size of this piece is the 2nd largest of the giclée prints in picture 3
